Charm and Tranquility

A Williamsburg VA Weekend Getaway ... The Staycation: Affordable Luxury, Fun and History

Wouldn’t you and your sweetheart just love going on a romantic vacation, one that took you to a place known far and wide for its culture, outdoor activities and charm?

“Yes!” you say, “but gas is so expensive. And airfare? Well, that’s beyond our budget. We’re not traveling anywhere far anytime soon. Vacation is out for us this year.”

Not so fast. As a resident in close proximity to Williamsburg, you’re already living close to a place known far and wide for its culture, outdoor activities and charm.

You can take a luxurious and exciting vacation right here in Williamsburg. You can take a “staycation.”

When you think of a romantic getaway do you think of the charm and ambience of a bed and breakfast? If so, you must check out the Boxwood Inn of Williamsburg, a Colonial bed and breakfast right here in Williamsburg.

The Boxwood Inn of Williamsburg offers you sumptuous king or queen beds, private baths for every room, whirlpool tubs, antiques, a gloriously sunny sun room and what many call Williamsburg’s “nicest back porch.” And let’s not forget our lovely perennial gardens that surround the Inn.

The B&B is located in Colonial Williamsburg’s Architectural Preservation District, which means you can walk just a short distance to all the history this city has to offer after you’ve enjoyed the Boxwood Inn’s delicious breakfast. The Inn also is just two blocks from the College of William and Mary.

With W&M just a quick walk away, your staycation can include an outing to see athletes garbed in green, gold and silver give it their all for The Tribe. Walk along the college’s grounds and, if you come across the Crim Dell Bridge, give your sweetheart a kiss. Just be sure you really like him or her because tradition has it that a kiss on Crim Dell results in wedded bliss (well, in marriage, at least).

You know how it is – you live in a vacation destination so you always figure you’ll get to those famous places “someday.” Well, on this staycation, let someday be today. Head on over to Colonial Williamsburg for a trip back to the 1600s and 1700s. Visit Busch Gardens or the Williamsburg Botanical Garden and get ready to gasp at the beauty of the blooms (and pick up some tips for your own garden). Visit the Governor’s Palace, Virginia’s first capitol building when Britain still governed. Still looking for history, make the quick 25-minute drive over to Yorktown to see where the last major battle was fought between Yankee rebels and the British.

From antique shops to quaint bookstores, you’ll find them in Williamsburg.  From clothing boutiques selling one-of-a-kind items, to the Prime Outlets, where you can find bargains on Gucci to Old Navy, Williamsburg has them.

Vacations should include some thrills, don’t you think? So should staycations. Head on over to Busch Gardens Europe, Water Country USA or even Go-Karts Plus for a day of white-knuckle fun.

We mean it. You don’t cook on “regular” vacations; staycations should be no different. Williamsburg has so many different types of eateries from which to choose. From Colonial-era fare at the many Taverns, to the diners, and family restaurants to four-star restaurants who provide you with a four-star meal, Williamsburg has them all.
