Grand Illumination in Williamsburg, Virginia

Williamsburg Bed and Breakfast > Colonial Williamsburg > Christmas in Williamsburg

People from near and far gather at Colonial Williamsburg each year to kick off the holiday season with an event known as "Grand Illumination." This is the official beginning of the holidays, with numerous events during the weekend. Saturday morning is the Holiday Parade on Duke of Gloucester Street, the pedestrian friendly main street that runs through Colonial Williamsburg. You'll see floats and marching bands, as well as classic cars and community organizations. You may even see dogs with festive outfits, and maybe even, a llama! That afternoon in Merchants Square, watch the mobile theater production of "A Christmas Carol" and start your shopping in the businesses in the square.

"The Inn is at its absolute most magnificent during the Christmas Season..." - repeat guests from Pennsylvania

Another wonderful option to get you in the holiday spirit is the annual Christmas Homes Tour, sponsored by the Green Spring Garden Club, which features six beautifully decorated homes open to the public. Each year, the homes on the tour change but include homes in the Historic Area that are not normally open for visitors. The floral arrangements are creative, beautiful and aim to be historically accurate. This popular event will give you dozens of decorating ideas - for your home and for the holidays!

Enjoy all Williamsburg has to offer but save some energy for the highlight of the whole weekend: the Sunday evening fireworks display. The weather varies each year, but there's always music and refreshments throughout the Historic Area making it festive. Come early and find a good spot to watch the fireworks, which are featured at three locations: the Palace, the Magazine and the Capitol. Stages with live music are set up to feature local and historic performances while you wait, and you can purchase snacks and hot beverages near each location. It is a very popular event, so plan to spend some time getting there and back - you can enjoy the beautifully decorated homes along DOG Street as you stroll.

While everyone else is waiting to get out of the parking lot, you can walk back to the Boxwood Inn and enjoy some drinks by the fire. Sandi and Steve can give you customized advice on the best way to enjoy Grand Illumination weekend in Williamsburg. They also love to decorate for Christmas so enjoy getting some tips on holiday decor. We're glad you are planning to join us and hope you enjoy a truly magical time of year- Happy Holidays!
